Go Dotty

            Polka Dot Trend 2011/2012
Polka dots brings out a simple hint of sophistication and is an effortless way to stay on the chic radar, it’s high time Altius readers get the details of the hottest trend featured on countless catwalks. We are going to be channelling the spot trend this autumn because if there was a prize for the most Fashionable Graphic of Autumn 2011/12 the polka dot would win hands down.

The fashion designers have brought the polkas dot back from obscurity. And wearing something dotty will give you that fizzy new season fashion feeling. We have found polka dots everywhere from perfectly on-trend colourful boyfriend cardigans, to wide leg palazzo pants, full skirts and draped dresses to dolly socks. All if it right now polka dots = fashion kudos. Spots are nothing new for the fashion masses—can you remember a recent season that didn't include a slew of leopard prints?

But for autumn 2011/12, a handful of designers took a polka dot approach, splattering their collections with graphic polka dots, a look more often shown in lighter spring presentations. Polka dots normally represent a charming, playful innocence, but Marc Jacobs did his in skin tight rubber: Stella McCartney’s were placed in an artful sheer base and her dotty options arrived in tonal black or white.

McCartney also played with oversize paillettes, but her dots were strongest in chic cocktail attire with sheer dotted panels or sleeves—her witty take on Swiss dots. While David Kormas dotty fashion was in Leather and fur.  Polka dots first showed up on Marc Jacobs's New York runway—though his fetish-fuelled collection meant they were sexier than the usual sweet spots we see.
Think latex skirts with oversize dot palettes, sheer Swiss dot tights, dotty fur collars, and spotted mini, mixed-up prints with green and grey graphic dots. All types of Polka dots are welcomed to this trend – Micro dots, coloured, bold, vintage inspired or dramatic dots! Take inspiration from Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci when wearing micro dots and stick the classic black and white for a clean look. This would help mirror the monochrome trend
It may be a long time before fashion's love for spots fades—but for autumn; a switch to sportier dots might be a perfect wardrobe pick-me-up.
