CHIC IN THE CITY

tHE CITY SMART LOOK 2011/2012

The secret to style on an urban retreat this A/W 2011 can be found in designers' more subdued offerings.  The decorative fringed dresses and riotous neon hues that caught the eye on the spring/summer 2011 catwalk should be confined to festivals and holidays in far-flung places as a city break demands a more pared-back approach.

A relaxed fit for men is, of course, nothing new. Loose layering, baggy jeans have been with us for some time now. But a line has to be drawn in the sand. The relaxed cuts of past years are distinctly different from the relaxed tailoring we’re about the encounter. One could rightly argue that these new men’s trends evolve from the old, but they are certainly not one in the same.

For women look to where clean silhouettes prevailed, their single-colour ensembles in deep colours and white broken only by the thinnest belts for a clean, unfussy look.  For women other designers embracing white were Alberta Ferretti  and Chanel, who all offered a modern take on the classic trouser suit. These smart pieces looked best without added adornment, take tips from the  women's catwalk styling and keep hair pulled back and make up to a minimum.
Smart trousers in luxe fabrics formed the basis of many designers' urban wardrobes this A/W 2011/2012: a modern ease paired with a classic white shirt or a sporty grey jumper. Further easy elegance can be found in monochromatic dresses this A/W.
Men’s tailoring with a soft touch, tailoring with a flare, tailoring with an injection of fashion, tailoring that, if not casual, is at least pared down. Whether you choose the caramel leather at Akris, the heavy white cotton at Derek Lam, or the denim at Stella McCartney stick to simple shapes in a neutral palette. If you can't resist a splash of colour, reds and oranges will complement your neutrals.
While the soft greens and orange at Burberry and D&G  made a big impact but kept a clean cut.  Take this lead and keep women's shapes simple and accessories to a minimum for an easy but elegant city wardrobe this A/W. Given that the best part of a men’s winter wardrobe is often its outerwear, it should come as no surprise to find that the tailored, seamless shoulder extends to more than just men’s sports coats. In fact, if the weighting of catwalk collections is anything to go by it’s going to be easier to invest in a statement piece where the seamless shoulder has been interpreted into the likes of duffle coats and trench coats.
